What is Venetian Plaster?

The origins of venetian plaster come from it's namesake Venice, Italy. As a city built upon stilts and with an underground subject to landslides it was not possible to make use of the marble and other stonework used by neighboring cities due to the weight upon the structure. This moved local artisans to experiment with lime and crushed marble to eventually produce a plaster that when properly finished looks like the stone and marble that venetians envied.

My mother-in law does faux finish, isn't that the same thing?

Venetian plaster while quite decorative is not a faux finish. Most types of venetian plasters will require a minimum of three treatments. The first being a base coat that will completely cover the entire surface to be treated.

What condition does my wall need to be in for venetian plaster?

Venetian plasters actually support and reinforce the substrate(wall). Depending on the type of plaster selected, little or no preparation is required.

What are some additional benefits of venetian plaster?

The beauty of venetian plaster revitalizes a room in ways that other treatments could never do, but there are practical benefits as well. 1) Mold resistance: Lime stone is a natural mold deterrent. Also when properly applied, the venetian plaster actually is breathable to reduce trapped moisture and deter mold growth. 2)Graffiti resistance: Some of our exterior venetian plasters may be washed down with acetone. This will remove spray paint, etc. and yet leave the surface intact. 3) As a natural and organic product, limestone reduces allergens.
